Looking at politics, it’s often the concepts that are most interesting, such as a smoking ban “going forward.”
As I understand it, there are efforts afoot to ban sales of tobacco products, ever, to people born after a certain date, both in the UK and also in PEI.
The concept is that people born after a certain date (inclusive) will simply never be legally permitted to purchase tobacco. The proposed date in the UK is January 1, 2009. People born on that date, being 15 now, can’t legally buy tobacco, since the permitted age is 18. If said legislation is passed, they simply never will be able to buy tobacco, legally, in the UK.
It’s a bold, intriguing idea, in a world where enforcement seems increasingly difficult, and discrimination by age is meant to be forbidden. Given that effects of smoking seem hard to deny nowadays, it will be an interesting contest of government protection vs individual freedom.
