In amateur boxing, do headguards increase safety? Perhaps not.
I’ve been involved in amateur boxing, wherein I’ve worn a headguard during sparring. I didn’t enjoy wearing it, nor did it make me feel safer.
It turns out that wearing a headguard in boxing might actually increase the chance of a concussion, for perhaps a surprising reason. By effectively making the target bigger, it can augment the leverage of a glancing blow, perhaps resulting in more twisting force.
Interesting, eh?
